President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev paid an official visit to Turkmenistan. The head of Uzbekistan was welcomed by Turkmen officials at the Ashgabat International Airport decorated with the state flags of two friendly countries. According to tradition, children in national costumes greeted the honoured guest with bread and salt and flowers.
The official visit by the head of Uzbekistan to Turkmenistan became an important milestone in the history of the centuries-old Turkmen-Uzbek relations that are based on the traditions of good neighbourliness, brotherhood and mutually beneficial cooperation. The talks between President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov and President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev became another consistent step towards expanding the interstate dialogue.
The talks were held in one-on-one and enlarged formats, during which the sides discussed the development of bilateral cooperation in the economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres. The heads of the two states paid special attention to issues of interaction in trade, economic, energy, transport and logistics, water, agriculture and other areas. The Presidents of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan also exchanged views on the international and regional issues of mutual interest. At the same time, special attention was paid to the issues of deepening cooperation in Central Asia and the situation in Afghanistan.
The talks finished with the ceremony of signing bilateral documents. The sides signed agreements on scientific and technical cooperation in the field of hydrometeorology, on the further development of bilateral foreign economic cooperation, on the regulation of the activities of Trade Houses in Turkmenistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan, on the further development of cooperation in agriculture. The sides also signed memorandums of understanding on cooperation in training of personnel for customs departments, identifying suspicious financial transactions, cinematography, electric power industry, registration of medicines and medical products, animal husbandry and veterinary medicine.
To the applause of the ceremony participants, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and President Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a Declaration on deepening the strategic partnership between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan. Upon completion of the signing of the documents, the heads of the two states made statements for press.
Then, the head of Uzbekistan met with Speaker of the Upper House of the Parliament of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. The sides exchanged views on priority issues of interstate cooperation, including through the parliamentary contacts based on the principles of mutual understanding, respect and trust. At the end of the meeting, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov presented the Uzbek leader with a Turkmen Alabay dog that was also named Alabay.
In the afternoon, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited the Memorial Complex “People’s Memory”, where he laid flowers at the “Eternal Glory” monument that immortalized the memory of the valiant defenders of the Motherland. He also visited the “Holiness of the Motherland” museum located in the territory of the Memorial Complex. Then, Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited the Magtymguly Turkmen State University, where the leader of the friendly country was awarded the academic title of honorary professor of this university in a solemn atmosphere.
On the same day, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and President Shavkat Mirziyoyev attended the opening of the Tashkent recreation park in Ashgabat. The heads of the two neighbouring states also participated online in the solemn ceremony of laying the foundation of the Turkmen-Uzbek border trade zone – a Trade Center in the territory of Dashoguz province.
In the evening, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov hosted an official dinner in honour of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. After the dinner, the leaders of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan proceeded to the Ashgabat International Airport, where they said goodbye to each other, expressing satisfaction with the results of the talks. Having completed his official visit to Turkmenistan, the head of the Republic of Uzbekistan boarded the plane and departed for his homeland.
