CYCLING AROUND THE WORLD
World Bicycle Day was widely celebrated in Turkmenistan. It was established by the UN General Assembly Resolution on Ashgabat's initiative. A large-scale bicycle ride in Ashgabat with participation of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov was the main event the celebration.
The head of state addressed thousands of cycling fans before the start of the ride. The Turkmen leader congratulated the participants of the bicycle ride on World Bicycle Day and noted that this international day promotes respect for the environment, improvement of people's health and development of physical culture and sports.
Then, the floor was given to official representative of Guinness World Records Subashi Sheyda. She announced that a new world record - the longest cycling parade along one line - was set during a cycling awareness lesson on 1 June 2019 at the Olympic Village in Ashgabat. The participants of this large-scale cycling event lined up at a certain distance from each other and cycled around the Olympic Village, covering a distance of 3300 meters.
In fact, the previous world record set on 3 March 2019 in India was beaten in Ashgabat. This fact was officially registered by Guinness World Records and confirmed in a certificate that was presented to the Turkmen side during the celebration of World Bicycle Day.
Then, the floor was given to David Lappartien, head of the International Cycling Union (UCI). He noted the role of Turkmenistan and President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov's personal contribution to establishing World Bicycle Day. In this regard, the head of the UCI announced the decision of the International Cycling Union to award the Certificate of Appreciation to the Turkmen leader. The Turkmen side was also presented with a certificate acknowledging Turkmenistan's right to host the World Track Cycling Championship in Ashgabat in 2021.
Following the official part, the President of Turkmenistan kick started a large-scale bicycle ride and cycled in the front line of cyclists. Headed by the head of state, a column of cyclists covered a distance of 15 thousand meters along the streets of the Turkmen capital, finishing on the main square near the presidential palace. Large-scale bicycle rides and exhibition sports performances were held in all regional centers of Turkmenistan.
Russian pilot-cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, a native of Turkmenistan, congratulated President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and the people of Turkmenistan on World Bicycle Day from the International Space Station.
"With all my heart I congratulate you and all Turkmen people represented by you on World Bicycle Day, the message reads. Established on Turkmenistan's initiative in 2018 by the UN General Assembly, World Bicycle Day is evidence of the recognition of the state policy under your leadership on the widespread introduction of a healthy lifestyle and popularization of physical education and sports.
For cosmonauts, physical health is one of the key components of the successful professional work and I naturally support your efforts to promote sports and a healthy lifestyle not only in Turkmenistan but also internationally.
As a native of Turkmenistan, I am very proud that the initiative of my Homeland to establish World Cycle Day has found unanimous support in the world. I ask you to convey my congratulations and wishes of peace and prosperity to the beloved Turkmen people."
Meanwhile, a traditional mass bicycle ride marking World Bicycle Day took place in the Russian capital. The action was organized by the Embassy of Turkmenistan in the Russian Federation. It brought together students of the Moscow higher education establishments, representatives of the Turkmen diaspora, members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Moscow.
The bicycle ride was held in one of the most picturesque corners of the Russian capital - the Gorky Park of Culture and Leisure. During the action, the bicycle ride participants acquainted Muscovites and visitors with the achievements of Turkmenistan in the field of physical education and sports, state policies aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle in the country. The winners of the bicycle ride were awarded souvenirs.
A bicycle ride was held in the central park of the Romanian capital on the occasion of World Bicycle Day. The event was organized by the Turkmen diplomatic mission in Romania and attended by both diplomats and Turkmen students studying at the universities of the Romanian capital.
The head of the Turkmen diplomatic mission addressed the participants before the start of the bicycle ride. He noted that the resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly on Turkmenistan's initiative that declared June 3 World Bicycle Day testifies to the recognition by the international community of the efforts to instill in the Turkmen society the principles of a healthy lifestyle, nurture an ecology-friendly culture and popularize sports among young people.
The Embassy of Turkmenistan in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia held a bicycle ride dedicated to World Bicycle Day. Representatives of the Humanitarian Association of the World Turkmens, activists of the Turkmen diaspora in Saudi Arabia and guests of honor participated in the sports rally.
A briefing was held before the start of the ride, during which the participants became acquainted with the history of this international sport day established by the resolution of the UN General Assembly on Turkmenistan's initiative.
The briefing was followed by cycling competitions for short and long distances. In addition, cyclists demonstrated their skills in fancy driving and obstacle bypassing.
The Embassy of Turkmenistan in the Republic of Belarus organized a bicycle ride among students of higher education institutions of Minsk in celebration of World Bicycle Day.
Students from Turkmenistan, the Republic of Belarus and other countries studying at the Belarusian State University of Physical Education, the Belarusian National Technical University, the Belarusian State Pedagogical University, as well as employees of the Turkmen diplomatic mission in the Republic of Belarus participated in the ride.
The Embassy of Turkmenistan in the Federal Republic of Germany organized a celebration of World Bicycle Day with the support of the diplomatic club Willkommen in Berlin under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany.
A bicycle ride was held in Berlin in the morning with participation of representatives of the diplomatic club Willkommen in Berlin under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany, staff of the diplomatic missions accredited in Germany, members of the Turkmen diaspora and students from Turkmenistan, as well as staff of the Turkmen diplomatic mission and members of their families. Cyclists rode through a picturesque park area, as well as around the sights of Berlin.
The sports and fitness action finished with celebrations on the occasion of World Bicycle Day at the embassy building. The celebration participants watched video materials describing the achievements of Turkmenistan in the field of physical education and sports, including cycling.
