GOLD LINK INFRASTRUCTURE
A new locomotive depot was officially commissioned at Bereket railway station in Turkmenistan. It was built as part of the measures for optimization of the transportation process through the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway, which is a gold link of the "North - South" transcontinental transport corridor.
President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov sent a congratulatory message to the railway workers of Turkmenistan on the commissioning of the new locomotive depot.
- Turkmenistan is now one of the most dynamically developing countries in the world. Rail transportation is one of the most important segments of the national economy. In a short time, major international projects have been implemented; railway stations, depots and relevant infrastructural facilities have been built and put into operation in line with the concept of the industry development. These measures contribute to improving quality of transportation services in our country and open up great prospects for the expansion of the fruitful trade and economic partnership with neighboring countries. Following the policy of peacefulness, humanism and constructive cooperation with all countries, Turkmenistan is creating transcontinental railway corridors in the transport and logistics sphere. These important initiatives are supported by the international community, the message says.
Representatives of the regional and district administrations, heads of the railway industry, representatives of labor collectives, public associations, honorable elders and youth took part in the commissioning ceremony.
The locomotive depot of the multipurpose station of the North - South transport corridor will ensure a new level of maintenance and operation of locomotives, functioning of the repair base for tractive rolling stock, improve the use of the locomotive fleet and increase the efficiency of the railway.
The locomotive sector is one of the key segments of the railway industry of Turkmenistan, and its efficient and trouble free functioning depends on the uninterrupted rhythm of domestic and international freight and passenger transportation, quality of service and stability of economic indicators for the Ministry of Railways of the country. For example, railway cargo transportation increased by 8.2 percent in January-September 2017 year-on-year, and most of the transit cargo is transported by railway, accounting for over 62 percent of the total volume of transit traffic since the beginning of the year.
The Bereket station is an important junction of the transnational railway Kazakhstan - Turkmenistan - Iran, and the new locomotive depot will increase the productivity of locomotives and operation teams, create comfortable working conditions for workers involved in ensuring safety of train traffic. The modern trends in the rail transport are linked to the more sophisticated construction of traction rolling stock, high intensity of train traffic and high maintenance costs for every locomotive. The efficient repair and maintenance play a significant role in ensuring reliability of transportation.
The locomotive depot of the Bereket station has all the conditions for this, including advanced technical diagnostics that ensure reliability of monitoring, measurement and inspection of facilities, fault prediction, as well as lifting, machine and technological equipment, stands and test sites.
The new facility is designed in such a way that it can maximize its production capacities and create the best conditions for performing repairs of rolling stock, its components, units and parts. Much attention is given to meeting the requirements of the scientific organization of the work processes, which primarily provides for labor protection and accident prevention.
The depot's modern equipment makes it possible to perform routine repairs for restoration of the basic operational characteristics and efficiency by replacing or repairing separate units, devices and details. Owing to the scope of operations, the depot has several repair areas for various types of services. The throughput capacity of the routine repairs area is 210 diesel locomotives per year, while maintenance areas have the capacity of 385 locomotives per year.
The repair shops of the depot are equipped with new models of forklifts, equipment for dismantling and assembling electric motors, lathes, tools for rounding off wheel pairs without dismantling them, four jacks with the carrying capacity of 40 tons, welding and charging devices, several stands to test the condition of units and devices of diesel locomotives.
Other than repair shops, there are special facilities for washing of diesel locomotives, removal of soot, heavy oil deposits from engine parts, carrying out rheostat checks of engine parts, a diesel power station, a storage for water, fuel and oil, equipment for sand drying, powerful air vents and steam tanks.
The depot also has a two-storey administrative building, engineering facilities and technical infrastructure, transfer depots, a facility for recreation of locomotive crews and a sports ground. In addition to the operational aspect, the new railway facility is of great social importance. Over six hundred new jobs have been created in a small city following its commissioning.
The upgrade of the locomotive sector of Turkmenistan's railway industry continues. A new diesel locomotive driving simulator has been recently installed in the Ashgabat section of the railway. This training simulator is designed to help improve quality of professional training and retraining of locomotive drivers and assistants, teaching them efficient driving techniques and practicing their interaction with railway station staff.
The Bereket station with the locomotive depot on the Kazakhstan - Turkmenistan - Iran railway section is of great importance for the efficient use of this railway in the system of interregional transit and transport communications of Eurasia and for strengthening trade and economic relations between the countries of the continent.
Development of Turkmenistan's international economic relations and foreign trade leads to the growth in cargo traffic volumes, and there is now a greater servicing role for all existing and newly built large transportation hubs of the country that are located in the very heart of the revived Great Silk Way.
